This project is situated on an existing foundation in the industrial zone of Matosinhos, and has an approximate area of 1000 m2. The program is a bar / discoteque and restaurant. The entrance hall is located on the axis of the main façade, on the right side are the dressing rooms. The previously existing auto access is converted into a service road for the restaurant and also functions as an emergency exit. There is also a third private entrance, with direct access to the office, located on the upper level. Following the main entrance hall (a vertical space illuminated by a great lantern), there is an area of horizontal distribution where a great metalic sculpture, which filters light and sound, organizes a route that culminates at the dance floor, in the center of the composition. This route allows an increasing adaptation to the surrounding ambience, emphasizing gradually the senses. Next to the separate entrances are located the public restrooms. Taking the advantage of the previously existing structure of the building, which was strong and simetrical, I adapted a tradition theater program, as it seemed to be well-suited to the functions of a discoteque. The halls of a traditional Renaissance theater (Shakespearean or commedia dell’arte) allowed the public active participation and a more intense contact with the stage, due to the absence of chairs on the floor. Also the galleries take on the characteristics of a traditional theater, creating an essential communication to the ambiance of spectacle. From the marriage between the pre-existing and the new structure, indispensable to the gallery floor, results the design of the principal façades. The fusion of these structures reduced to the essential, is responsible for the language that aims to emphasize the programmatic aspects outlined above. The selection and use of materials fulfill aims that go beyond their own functionality. The stone, on the lower floor represents solidity and a structural base; the wood on the upper floor, stage and dancefloor symbolizes confort and ligthness. The meeting of the two occurs at the level in-between red brick, with its rough and permeable surface, permits the absorption of sound and light, creating the ideal conditions for acustics and ambience. Iron appears as a plastic element, recalling the old foundation, and situating itself as a dynamic factor that highlights the existing geometric order. The consideration of the functional aspects of the program, but above all, the consideration that good architecture always results from a successful resolution of its details, led to the strength in the details, which I trust to give strength to the work.
